The Kuopio Symphony Orchestra’s A Love Held in Silence season concert on Thursday 20th of March at 6 pm will feature the Kuopio premiere of Sebastian Fagerlund’s commissioned work Lanterna. The soloist will be the renowned Storioni Trio, which includes pianist Bart van de Roer, violinist Wouter Vossen and cellist Marc Vossen. The concert, organized at the Kuopio Music Centre’s Concert Hall, will begin with Jean Sibelius’ Tempest Suite No. 2, and will end with Johannes Brahms’ beautiful Symphony No. 3 conducted by the chief conductor Eugene Tzigane. The concert will be livestreamed on the orchestra’s YouTube channel.

At the beginning of the concert, Kuopio Music Centre’s Concert Hall is hit by The Tempest, which throws listeners into the world of theatre and music, the world of Shakespeare and Sibelius. The Tempest is his most magnificent stage music piece; after its premiere, it was stated: ‘Shakespeare and Sibelius, these two geniuses, have found each other.’ The orchestral genius offers the listener unheard orchestral colors, from the Chorus of the Winds to the enchanting Dance of Nymphs.

Lanterna (2023) is a piece by Fagerlund, one of the most internationally acclaimed Finnish composers of his generation, commissioned by The Hague Residentie Orchestra, Turku Philharmonic Orchestra, Kuopio Symphony Orchestra and the Dutch Storioni Trio. The work will have its Kuopio premiere at the concert. “Lanterna realises a kind of ‘work within the work’ idea, which was already in my mind from the beginning. However, I have never composed a work like this, where there are many works nested inside one other,” Fagerlund says. “The name means a lantern. Let’s imagine there’s one at sea, and when you’re close to it, you can see it clearly, but when you start to distance yourself from it, the light starts to dissipate and change due to distance and things like waves, fog or other sea conditions”, the composer describes. The Storioni Trio is one of the world’s leading piano trios, whose speciality is the triple concerto repertoire for piano trio and orchestra. The group has commissioned a considerable number of triple concertos itself.

The concert ends with Johannes Brahms’ Third Symphony, which is based on Brahms’ relationship with Robert and Clara Schumann. Welcomed into their home and hearts, Brahms found himself not only admiring their musical talents but also developing a deep affection for Clara. But tragedy soon struck when Robert’s mental health deteriorated. The specifics of their relationship during this trying time remain veiled in history, but his unwavering devotion to Robert served as his guiding light. These traumatic events eventually became the fabric of Brahms’ Third Symphony. It serves as a musical confession, a testament to the internal struggle between love and loyalty, and to the sacrifices made in the name of friendship and honor.

The concert will be livestreamed on the KSO’s YouTube channel and will be available for a month.

On the same day, 20th of March at noon you can enjoy KSO’s open rehearsal, where the orchestra will play excerpts of the evening’s concert programme under the baton of Eugene Tzigane.
