Johannes Brahms: Symphony No 3
In the intricate dance of human relationships, love and loyalty can sometimes find themselves at odds. This was the heart-wrenching dilemma that faced the young Johannes Brahms when he met Robert and Clara Schumann. Welcomed into their home and hearts, Brahms found himself not only admiring their musical talents but also developing a deep affection for Clara. But tragedy soon struck when Robert’s mental health deteriorated, leaving the Schumann family devastated and without the patriarch. In the midst of Clara’s grief and vulnerability, Brahms chose loyalty to the Schumanns over his love for Clara. The specifics of their relationship during this trying time remain veiled in history, but his unwavering devotion to Robert served as his guiding light. These traumtic events eventually became the fabric of Brahms’ Third Symphony. It serves as a musical confession, a testament to the internal struggle between love and loyalty, and to the sacrifices made in the name of friendship and honor.
Lanterna (2023) is a piece by Fagerlund, one of the most internationally acclcaimed Finnish composers of his generation, commissioned by The Hague Residentie Orchestra, Turku Philharmonic Orchestra, Kuopio Symphony Orchestra and the Dutch Storioni Trio. The work will have its Kuopio premiere at the concert. “Lanterna realises a kind of ‘work within the work’ idea, which was already in my mind from the beginning. However, I have never composed a work like this, where there are many works nested inside one other,” Fagerlund says. “The name means a lantern. Let’s imagine there’s one at sea, and when you’re close to it, you can see it clearly, but when you start to distance yourself from it, the light starts to dissipate and change due to distance and things like waves, fog or other sea conditions.”
At the beginning of the evening, Kuopio Music Centre’s Concert Hall is hit by The Tempest, which throws listeners into the world of theatre and music, the world of Shakespeare and Sibelius,.
The concert is included in the Season Series Ticket and Mini Series Ticket 2.
