“An Apollonian Dithyramb to a Florentine Spring

Wilhelm Stenhammar was dubbed the “Swedish Brahms” and not without reason. In fact, as young man, he studied piano with one of Clara Schumann’s pupils and like Brahms, also flirted with Wagnerianism, especially in his earlier compositions. The Serenede itself was inspired by a trip to Italy in 1906/7. It has all the hallmarks of a travelogue, particularly because he alluded to a “veiled hint of a programme.” Thus the Serenade straddles the Romantic divide between programmatic (New German School) and absolute music (Leipzig conservatives). The Serenade is a beautiful melange of Mendelssohnian restraint and clarity, intoxicatingly sensual Wagnerian harmonies, a Brahmsian penchant for soulful, yet understated melodies and allusions to Renaissance polyphony. There are festivities, nocturnal romances, eventually a sunrise and joyful life-affirming celebrations. The program begins however with another Sunrise, this time from the Finnish composer Ida Moberg’s Suite for Orchestra. Though she studied with the New German School advocate, Felix Draeske in Dresden, Moberg’s style takes more inspiration from Brahms and the Leipzig School than Wagner. Shunske Sato, the leader of the period orchestra, Concerto Köln, and an expert in 19th Century Historical performance practices, will be joining us to share his new perspective on Brahms’ Violin Concerto.”
