Jean Sibelius: Symphony No 3 in C major Op. 52
“Jean Sibelius set the tone for Finnish and Nordic music for the 20th Century. Many that came after him struggled to escape his shadow, but among them were Helvi Leiviskä and Sebastian Fagerlund. We have already been introduced to Leiviskä by way of her 1st Symphony in December 2023 and are pleased to bring yet another gem.
As Romanticism entered its twilight years, Jean Sibelius was busy reinventing the very concept of what a symphony is. Rather than being an epic pronouncement, his symphonies became more compact in form and emotionally restrained, albeit without giving into the Modernist trends of totally objective and impersonality. So powerful was his voice that it came to define the Nordic and Scandinavian musical aesthetic. And though his early music is overtly patriotic and intended to rouse nationalistic sentiments, the profound shift that he incited with this middle-period work is one of quiet revolution. He shed and/or subsumed the dominant Russian and Germanic influences, transforming them into a distinctly Finnish musical aesthetic and language.
His legacy has been one of the riches of the 20th Century, making Finland one of the most fertile musical lands in the world. Among the great composers to emerge was Helvi Leiviskä of the interwar generation. She sought to expand the grammar of the Sibelian aesthetic, gradually evolving into a modernist voice. We once again revisit her earlier music, the suite from her score to the film, Juha. Rounding out the program is the masterful Clarinet Concerto by Sebastian Fagerlund. This contemporary classic from 2006 is a dazzling virtuoso work that will showcase the brilliance of Christoffer Sundqvist, Solo Clarinet of the RSO.”
