Leevi Madetoja: Symphony 1 in F Major Op. 29
Einar Englund: Piano Concerto No 1
Helvi Leiviskä: Symphony No 1 in B-flat Major
In this celebration of Finnish Independence, we present three Finnish Maestri of the 20th Century. We begin with Leevi Madetoja, a student and life-long admirer of Sibelius, who excelled in gorgeous sonorities and color, combining French sensibilities with Nordic formal logic. His 1st symphony was written in 1916, the year Einar Englund was born. The younger composer gave us 7 wonderful symphonies and many concerti. Mirka Viitala plays his magnificent 1st Piano Concerto from 1955. The last work is by Helvi Leiviskä, a student of Madetoja before WWII. Her 1st symphony from 1947 is an opulent, late-Romantic work with many Modernist touches and daring sonorities, yet one can hear the echos of Sibelius and Madetoja. It is a rare event in which we are proud to present these spectacular and highly under-rated composers all in one evening! (Eugene Tzigane)
